Mustard Greens-Richest Plant Sources of Iron

Mustard greens, the peppery leaves of the mustard plant are incredibly nutritious. They’re low in calories yet rich in fibre and micronutrients. These greens contain many health-boosting antioxidants like beta carotene, which can protect your skin and lower risk factors of diabetes. They are also a great source of several B vitamins, including thiamine (B1,) niacin (B3,) and pyridoxine (B6).

In particular, they’re an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and K. As a result, eating them may have benefits for eye and heart health, as well as anticancer and immune-boosting properties.

Mustard greens have been associated with preventing arthritis, osteoporosis, iron-deficiency anaemia, asthmas and lung diseases.

Some other vegetables that are high in iron includes:

  • Spinach.
  • Swiss chard.
  • Cooked beet greens.
  • Canned tomatoes.
  • Lamb’s lettuce.
  • Green cabbage.
  • Brussels sprouts.
  • Boiled green peas.

Why is iron important?

Iron is vital for our body as it helps to produce haemoglobin, a protein that helps red blood cells transport oxygen.

Iron is important for :

  • supporting muscle metabolism
  • supporting the development of connective tissue such as blood and cartilage
  • supporting brain development
  • helping the body synthesise hormones
  • maintaining proper functioning of the body’s cells

A person not getting enough iron or is  iron deficient can experience symptoms like:

  • low energy
  • breathlessness
  • chest pain
  • cold hands and feet
  • depression
  • irregular heart rate

In severe cases, iron deficiency can become life threatening. People deficient in iron typically have longer hospital stays, worse outcomes when they get sick, a higher risk of heart health issues, and a higher overall risk of dying.

In children, iron deficiency can lead to neurological problems and developmental delays. Menstruation in females can also contribute to iron deficiency

This is why it is crucial to have an iron rich diet and when deficient should always consult a doctor to assess potential causes of iron deficiency. People with the condition may need to take supplements to restore iron levels to optimal levels.

Some of the suggested Iron supplements

  1. Amway Nutrilite Cherry Iron
  2. Gynoveda Iron Folic Acid Supplement
